Raising voices to save lives

The Black Living Donor Choir was created in 2022 by Dr. Dela Idowu, founder of Gift of Living Donation (GOLD), as a platform to raise awareness of living kidney donation in the Black community through music. The choir’s unique approach — combining music with living donor stories — has allowed them to reach a wide and diverse audience.

The choir shows through singing and dancing that one can live a full and active life with one kidney.

Mission

We are on a mission to empower the Black community to act by raising awareness and understanding of living kidney donation. Through our music and storytelling, our choir shares powerful real-life experiences that bring people together, replacing fear with hope and clarity. We aim to inspire more people to consider living kidney donation and begin conversations, because every story has the power to transform a life.

01.

Our Story

Founded by living kidney donors and recipients, the Black Living Donor Choir was born from a desire to turn personal stories of survival into a collective anthem of hope.

02.

Our Mission

To educate, inspire, and advocate for living kidney donation within the Black community through the universal language of music, compassion, and lived experience.

03.

Community Roots

Deeply rooted in local communities across the UK, we partner with NHS trusts, hospitals, and organisations to close the gap in Black donor registration.

What people say about us

I never knew anything about living donation before. I didn’t realise it was something Black people could do in the same way. Seeing the choir perform made it feel real, and I went home and talked to my family about it.

I honestly didn’t know much about living donation at all. Watching the choir sing and seeing people who look like me made me think differently, it opened up a conversation in my home that we’d never had before.

We saw the choir performing at Brixton station and were drawn in immediately. It was uplifting, but also made us stop and think especially as Black people about how we can talk about donation within our own families.
